Moral of Story 3: Problems of eating too much candy.
- There is a boy who loves candies and refuses to eat his vegetable.
- As a result, he teeth began to decay, and one day chips off.
- He visited the dentist and had his two front teeth extracted
- He learns his lesson after that and eats in moderation.

01. Characters

Edward
The story centers on Edward, the main character of this story. Edward plays a child who is obsessed with sweets and candy. His obsession went to the extend where he would mix sweets and candy together with his vegetables and rice in order to finish his dinner. His teeth began to decay and he had to see the scary dentist. He learns his lesson from that day on and doesn’t binge on sweets anymore.

Edward’s Mother
Edward’s mother is portrayed as the role of the adviser and she is not able to get Edward to listen to her. This is a reflection of the situation in reality, in the sense that most of the time, the parent’s advice is not heeded – unless physical punishment is used – until the kid suffers the consequences. Therefore, most kids can relate to Edward.

Dentist
The dentist is the main tool in the story’s use of fear appeals. During the group’s discussion, it was interesting to note how most of us were afraid of the dentist as a kid. This stereotype of the “killer” dentist is therefore amped up with the use of unusualness in his facial features.

02. Plot

This story is centered on Edward who is obsessed with sweets, candy, ice cream and basically all the sweet stuff that most kids love. Ignoring the warnings from his mother, he eventually loses his teeth. From that day on, he learns his lesson and practices self-control and eats his sweets in moderation.

03. Storyline

Introduction Scene
Edward is a normal boy whose only problem is his sweet tooth. He loves it so much that he goes to the extreme by his mixing sweets with his rice and vegetables during meals. His helpless mother perpetually warns him of the consequences of his eating habits, however he does not heed her advice and continues to binge.

As days go by, he continues his bad habit and periodically goes to the fridge to take his sweets. (It is questionable on why there would be sweets in the fridge in the first place, but we made this assumption to keep the story simple for children)

The body
Eventually Edward’s teeth began to decay and turn yellow as days past. One day, his teeth finally chipped off in the midst of his candy binge. In shock, he ran to his mother to seek comfort and started crying. Edward’s mother then decides to bring him to the dentist, which becomes a frightening experience.

At the dental clinic, Edward hides behind his mother when he was introduced to the dentist. The dentist then examines Edward’s teeth and shakes his head in dismay. Edward tooth decay was so bad that he needed to extract a number of his teeth.

The dentist takes out a syringe and injects Edward to put him to sleep for the “surgery”. Edward’s vision starts to blur and doesn’t have an recollection of the surgical process. Even though in reality, a surgery will not actually happen when you get a chipped tooth, however we felt that this storyline would compliment the use of fear appeals.

The Climax
Edward wakes up the next day thinking that it was a dream. When he goes into the bathroom and looks at mirror, he gets a nasty surprise. A lot of his teeth were missing and it looked very ugly.

Conclusion
From that day onwards, Edward learnt his lesson and began to limit his “sugar” intakes and stopped binging on sweets. Overtime, his teeth grew back and he had his smile again.

Final Project Critique Session

Some of the classmates prefer the idea on "The magical fridge", despite that our group still decides to proceed with our final idea presented today.

Comments received from the class was:
  • We should add in more frames to describe how Edward, our main character being able to find sweets/chocolates from the fridge when his mother doesn't allow him to eat that. One of the classmate suggested having Edward secretly buy sweets from his school canteen and keep it inside the refrigerator.
  • One of the classmate also pointed out that there are grammatical errors in our story, which we need to correct.
  • We might have to change the use of the word "anesthetic" as the kids might not be able to read/understand it.

Assignment 5 Critique Session

Category: , By Sherilyn
The first comment that I received from the class was my work is a poster instead of info-graphic! I could not agree with their way of saying that info-graphic should be landscape instead of portrait. From my findings, I do find elongated portrait form of info-graphic. Yu han pointed out that except cow graphics, others graphics (meat and fruits & vegetables) are more for decorative purposes than being a part of info-graphic. Some suggested having a time line or bar chart.

Info-graphic can be a poster. But a poster can not be an info-graphic.

Reflection

Still having difficulty differentiating poster and info-graphic.

How to improve on the assignment?
  • Change it to landscape instead of portrait
  • Make the cow the focus in the center and label different part of it that emitting greenhouse gases.
  • Might remove the steak and vegetables graphics if I cant find a way to integrate them.

Assignment 5 Final Prototype

This is my final prototype. The main idea was to illustrate that cow emits the most greenhouse gases among all animals, which causes climate change. I'm trying to create awareness, and at the same time promote eating less meat and more vegetables and fruits to reduce greenhouse emission.

Draft Narration

This is Edward, a boy who loves sweets.

Edward's mother cooked vegetable for dinner.
However, Edward refused to eat them.

The boy instead, added cakes, chocolates and ice-cream to his plate of rice.

"Edward! You would lose all your teeth one day, if you eat so much sweets all the time." shouted Edward's mother.

Edward ignores his mother and continues his feast on his sweets.

"I want more candies tommorow!" thought Edward as he went off to bed.

The next morning, Edward woke up. He wanted sweets.
He went to the Kitchen.

Edward opened the refrigerator, grabbed a lolipop and started eatting it.

"Crack!" The boy's tooth chipped and fell off

"Mommy!" cried Edward.
Edward's mother noticed his chipped tooth.
"Oh dear, I have to bring you to a dentist now!" she said.

Over at the Dentist's, Edward held his mother's hand tightly.
"Sit over there, little boy." said the dentist.
Edward went over unwillingly.

The dentist examines Edward's teeth.
"We need extract your tooth." said the Dentist.
Edward cried.

The doctor injected anesthetic into Edward with a long syringe.

Soon, Edward's vision blurred and he fell asleep.

The boy woke up the day after.
There was no pain and no dentist.
"It was a dream", he thought.

Edward went to the washroom.
He was shocked to see in the mirror that his tooth was no longer there.

Thereafter, Edward never refused to eat Vegetables again.

Assignment 3 Critique Session

Received quite a number of comments after presenting the prototype to the class. Below are comments/suggestions, which I gathered from the critique session.

One of the classmate pointed out that she couldn't tell that it was the dog owner who picked up the poo on the floor (7th photo). The tutor suggested to leave out the first photo (Don't add in the dog's emotion to complicate the story). The tutor also advised to enlarge or take a closer photo of the poster(9th photo) to focus on the main poster "be a responsible pet owner". Overall, everyone is able to tell the story as it is quite direct.

Reflection

How to improve on the assignment?
1)Take a extreme close up of the poster.
2)Take a full body length photo of the "owner" picking up the poo.
3)Take a photo that show interactions between the dog owner and the passerby who is pointing at the dog's poo.

Working with a pet is extremely difficult, especially when you want them to perform desired actions. To retake photo that show interactions between the dog owner and passerby is tough, and it's impossible to re-stage that scene.

Assignment 2 Critique Session

After presenting the process of abstraction for assignment 2, below are the comments given by the tutor and classmates.

1)The visual statement for the Justin Bieber and Sean Kingston is not very strong as compared to the visual statement for Avril Lavigne and Taylor Swift
2)In terms of visual, Justin Bieber and Sean Kingston abstraction process is better executed than the Avril Lavigne and Taylor Swift
3)Can further abstract on the of Avril Lavigne and Taylor Swift piece.

Result: Whole class seems to encourage me to use Justin Bieber and Sean Kingston for the abstraction assignment.

Reflection
I didn't really formulate well the visual statement for the abstraction of Justin Bieber and Sean Kingston unlike the other one. Unfortunately, I don't get as many comments as the assignment 1, so I'm still quite lost as in what else I can do to improve on this assignment. More likely, I will explore more on the piece on Avril Lavigne and Taylor Swift.

Assignment 2 Abstraction Process Part 2

Category: By Sherilyn
Using Avril Lavigne and Taylor Swift for assignment 2 was my initial idea, just that I proceeded with the abstraction of Justin Bieber and Sean Kingston first as I'm able to find a edited photo of them together. I purposely find a photo of Taylor Swift singing with a guitar and Avril Lavigne with a similar pose to illustrate that are performing on the same stage.

My visual statement for this piece of work is that Avril Lavigne and Taylor Swift have common talents. Both of them can sing, play guitar and compose song despite having different style. Avril Lavigne dressing style is more of punk or rocker type while Taylor Swift is toward sweet and mature kind. I try to place both artists close together, facing the same direction to create the effect of them performing together.

Assignment 2 Abstraction Process Part 1

Category: By Sherilyn
The celebrities used in this abstraction process are justin bieber and sean kingston. This pair share a love music that is why they are collaborating in making the song "Eenie Meenie". Regardless of appearance (black or white) as long as you have talents, you can pair with one another to make music.

However, for the visual statement, I want to present is that despite this pair come close to each other (standing side by side), they are quite different in terms of their music talents. Justin bieber is talented in the sense that he can sing and dance and able to play drum and guitar. In contrast, Sean kingston has a style of his own, performing rap lyrics set to hip-hop and reggae beats. He also able to produce and write songs without having to use profanity and degradation of women.

From my point of view, sean kingston is more talented than justin bieber, which is the reason why I position him ahead of justin bieber.
